Definitions

ADU — “ADU” is an acronym for “Accessory Dwelling Unit.”

ANSI — “ANSI” is an acronym for the American National Standards Institute, which is a nonprofit association that establishes procedures and guidelines to create recognized minimum safety standards for products used by both consumers and industries

ANSI A119.5  This is a recreational vehicle (RV) park model (see below) standard that covers the fuel systems and equipment, health, fire and life safety provisions, plumbing systems, and construction requirements.

Composting Toilet  A composting toilet is a type of dry toilet that treats human waste by a biological process called composting. This process leads to the decomposition of organic matter and turns human waste into compost-like material.

Container Home  Shipping container architecture is a form of architecture that uses steel intermodal containers as its main structural element.

Greywater/Gray Water  This refers to domestic wastewater generated in households from streams without fecal contamination.

IBC  “IBC” is an acronym for the International Building Code. The IBC addresses both health and safety concerns for buildings based upon prescriptive and performance related requirements.

IRC  “IRC” is an acronym for the International Residential Code. The International Building Code and International Residential Code are used interchangeably.

ICC  “ICC” is an acronym for the International Code Council, which is a standards organization that creates the International Building Code (IBC), a model building code, as well as the International Residential Code (IRC), and other model codes. 

Manufactured Home — A “manufactured home” is a home built in a factory and installed under a federal building code administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These standards regulate the construction of these homes in terms of fire resistance, energy efficiency and the home’s overall quality. 

MTH  “MTH” is an acronym for “Modular Tiny Home,” which is produced in a factory, in pieces, then assembled on-site.

NFPA 1192  This is an RV standard that covers the fuel systems and equipment, fire and life safety provisions, plumbing systems, and vehicular requirements.

NZE — “NZE” is an acronym for “net-zero energy,” which means that the total amount of energy used is equal to the amount of renewable energy created on-site.

Off-Grid  This is a characterization of a building or lifestyle that traditionally refers to being unconnected to an electrical grid, but can also include other utilities, such as water, gas and sewer systems.

Park Model  Park models or park model recreational vehicles (PMRVs) are built on a single chassis and mounted on wheels, and they have a gross trailer area not exceeding 400 square feet in the setup mode. They are certified by their manufacturers as complying with the ANSI A119.5 standard for recreational park trailers.

RV  “RV” is an acronym for “recreational vehicle,” which is a motor vehicle or trailer that includes living quarters designed for accommodation.

RVIA  “RVIA” is an acronym for the RV Industry Association. This association works with federal and state lawmakers and regulators to pursue a favorable business environment for the RV industry.

Stick-Built Home  This is a wooden house constructed entirely or largely on-site, rather than in a factory or similar facility.

THOW  “THOW” is an acronym for “Tiny Home on Wheels.”

Tiny Home  Tiny Homes are typically under 400 square feet. These homes can offer low-cost, eco-friendly alternatives within the housing market.
